Canada has made eTA Compulsory for the Visa Exempt Foreign Nationals

With effect from March 15, 2016, the eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) will be mandatory for the visa exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. The US citizens and the travelers with valid visa have been exempted from eTA. However, the US permanent residents would require eTA for travelling by air to Canada. Hence, if you have not applied for an eTA till now, you should apply fast to avoid last minute haste and chaos; however, if you are traveling to Canada before March 15, 2016, you don’t need it.

What is eTA?

The eTA is the latest entry requisite designed for the foreign nationals who doesn’t require the visa while traveling by air to Canada. The eTA helps the authorities to review such travelers before actually arriving in Canada. The eTA gets electronically connected to the passport of a traveler and remains valid for 5 years or till the expiry date of the passport whichever is earlier.

The eTA is for visa-exempt countries only

The eTA, however, is applicable to the nationals of visa exempt countries only and the nationals of the countries, which don’t come under Canada’s visa-exempt program, will have to apply for regular visa. You may refer the CIC website to check the list of Visa-exempt countries.

How to apply for eTA?

You can apply for eTA online through the CIC website; however, you need to have the following things to apply:

• Visa Exempt country’s Valid passport
• Accepted Credit Card (i.e. Master Card, Visa, etc.)
• Valid E-mail address

The eTA will cost you CAD$7 and it will be valid till 5 years.

Who are exempt from eTA?

• US Citizens (US permanent residents are not exempted)
• Canadian Permanent Resident
• Canadian Citizens
• The nationals of the countries, which are not included in visa-exempt program of Canada, shall follow the regular visa procedure.
